More about Three Ireland
Three Ireland launched on 26 July 2005 as Hutchison 3G Ireland. It grew by buying O2 Ireland. The deal was announced in June 2013 at €780 million and cleared by the European Commission in 2014, and the O2 brand was retired on 2 March 2015 when its customers moved to Three.
That merger is why two kinds of Three SIM are still in use. Most carry Three's own network code, 272 05, and use the APN 3ireland.ie. SIMs inherited from O2, whose numbers begin 8935302, carry O2's code, 272 02, and use the APN internet. Check the number printed on your SIM before you type anything.
Three switched on 5G in September 2020. Its support pages cover 4G Calling, Three's name for VoLTE, and Wi-Fi Calling. On ComReg's figures for the last quarter of 2025 it held 49.7% of Irish mobile subscriptions counting mobile broadband and machine connections, and 27.6% without them. Its head office is on Sir John Rogerson's Quay in Dublin.
48, Tesco Mobile Ireland and Virgin Media's Virgin Mobile rent capacity on Three. 48 and Tesco Mobile route their data through Liffey Telecom, so their APNs end in liffeytelecom.com rather than 3ireland.ie.
