Mobile Carriers in India
Nearby countries
India's mobile market is huge, cheap, and dominated by four names: Jio, Airtel, Vi, and the state-owned BSNL. There's almost no MVNO layer here the way there is in Europe or the US — you buy directly from the network — so the choice comes down to which of these four serves you best.
Jio rewrote the market when it launched in 2016 with free data and rock-bottom prices, and it's now the largest network with the widest 4G and the most aggressive 5G rollout. Airtel is the strong premium alternative, often ahead on call quality and customer experience, with excellent urban 5G. Vi — the merged Vodafone Idea — still has a large base but has been losing ground and trails on 5G coverage. BSNL is the government operator: cheap, far-reaching in some rural pockets, but slower to modernise.
Data is absurdly cheap in India by global standards — a month of generous 4G/5G data costs less than a coffee in most Western cities. That's the legacy of the price war Jio started, and it's why Indians consume some of the most mobile data per person on earth.
Picking between them
For most people in cities and towns, it's a Jio-versus-Airtel decision. Jio wins on price and raw 5G footprint; Airtel wins on network quality and support, and is the one I'd suggest if reliability matters more than saving a few rupees. Vi is worth it only if it happens to cover your specific area better than the other two. BSNL makes sense in particular rural zones and for cost-conscious users who don't need fast data.
eSIM and getting connected
Jio, Airtel, and Vi support eSIM on compatible phones; BSNL's support is more limited. Activating any Indian SIM requires KYC — proof of identity and address — and for visitors a passport and visa. Tourist SIMs are easy to get at major airports on arrival, which is usually the smoothest option if you're flying in.
