MVNOs
Australia has three mobile networks, and in a country this size, coverage is the whole game. Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone (now part of TPG) own the towers. Every other brand you'll see runs on one of them, so the first question is never "which brand" — it's "which network reaches where I'm going."
Telstra is the clear coverage leader, full stop. It reaches the most remote-area population and the most highway kilometres by a wide margin, which matters enormously the moment you leave the coast. Optus is a strong second and fine for most city and suburban life. Vodafone/TPG is competitive in metro areas and usually the cheapest of the three, but its rural reach is the thinnest.
The value comes from MVNOs. Boost Mobile is the standout because it's the only reseller with access to Telstra's full retail network — same towers, lower price. Belong is Telstra's own budget brand on a slightly narrower footprint. Aldi Mobile and Amaysim run on Optus. Pick the host network first, then the cheapest brand on it.
Telstra coverage is worth paying for — sometimes
Here's the honest trade-off. If you live and stay in a capital city, paying a Telstra premium buys you little that Optus or a cheap Optus MVNO won't match. The moment you drive the outback, tour the coast, camp, or work regionally, Telstra's reach stops being a luxury and becomes the difference between calling for help and not. Boost on full Telstra coverage is the value sweet spot for travellers.
eSIM and switching
All three networks support eSIM on modern phones, and most major MVNOs now offer it too. Switching keeps your number and is straightforward — sign up with the new provider, request the port, and it usually completes the same day. You'll need 100 points of ID to activate any Australian SIM, prepaid included, under identity-verification rules.
