Network & APN Glossary

Every term you'll encounter on an APN settings screen, explained in plain English.

The gateway name your phone uses to connect to your carrier's data network. The single most important value for mobile data to work.

eSIMDevice

Embedded SIM

A reprogrammable SIM built into the device, activated by scanning a QR code instead of inserting a physical card.

IMEIDevice

International Mobile Equipment Identity

A unique 15-digit serial number identifying a physical phone, used for activation and blocklisting.

MMSCNetwork

Multimedia Messaging Service Center

The server URL your phone sends picture and group messages to. Required for MMS to send and receive.

MCCStandard

Mobile Country Code

A three-digit code identifying the country of a mobile network — e.g. 310–312 for the United States.

MNCStandard

Mobile Network Code

A two- or three-digit code identifying a specific carrier within a country, paired with the MCC.

MVNOCarrier-type

Mobile Virtual Network Operator

A carrier that resells service on another company's physical network rather than owning its own towers.

MNOCarrier-type

Mobile Network Operator

A carrier that owns and operates its own radio network and spectrum.

PDPNetwork

Packet Data Protocol

The context that defines how a data session is carried — its type (IPv4, IPv6, or both) is set in the APN.

RCSStandard

Rich Communication Services

The successor to SMS/MMS, adding typing indicators, read receipts, and high-res media over data.

SUPLStandard

Secure User Plane Location

A protocol that helps your phone get a GPS fix faster using network assistance data, configured via the APN type.

VoLTEStandard

Voice over LTE

Carrying voice calls over the 4G LTE data network instead of legacy 2G/3G circuits, enabling HD voice and simultaneous data.

Mobile connectivity has a vocabulary problem. Every settings screen and support article throws acronyms at you — MMSC, MCC, bearer, VoLTE — and assumes you already know what they mean. Most people don't, and there's no reason they should.
