More about Vodafone India

Vodafone India began as Hutchison Max Telecom, a joint venture of Hutchison Whampoa and the Max Group established on 21 February 1992. It won the licence for the Bombay circle in November 1994 and launched its Max Touch service that year, and was renamed Hutchison Essar in August 2005.

Vodafone agreed on 11 February 2007 to buy a controlling 67% stake for about $11.1 billion, completed the purchase on 8 May 2007, and the company became Vodafone Essar. Its operational head office was in Mumbai. It launched 3G in 2011, began rolling out 4G in Kochi on 8 December 2015, and offered 4G nationally from 2017.

Vodafone India merged with Idea Cellular on 31 August 2018 to form Vodafone Idea, and on 7 September 2020 the two brands became Vi. Vi still uses Vodafone's APN, www, and its MMS profile, portalnmms.
