Japan runs on four networks: NTT Docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank, and the newcomer Rakuten Mobile. Coverage across all of them is excellent — this is one of the most thoroughly connected countries on earth, with strong signal deep into subway tunnels and rural valleys where other countries give up.

NTT Docomo is the largest and has the most complete coverage, the default choice for anyone going off the main cities. au (run by KDDI) and SoftBank are close behind with near-nationwide reach. Rakuten Mobile is the fourth entrant, built recently with aggressive pricing; its own network covers the cities well and roams on au elsewhere, so its standalone footprint is still catching up in remote areas.

The clever part of the Japanese market is the online-only sub-brands the big three launched to compete with Rakuten on price. Docomo has ahamo, au has povo, and SoftBank has LINEMO. Same networks as their parents, set up entirely through an app with no store visit, at a fraction of the flagship cost.

What to pick, and a warning

For coverage everywhere, Docomo or an ahamo plan on it is the safe bet. For value in cities, the online sub-brands — ahamo, povo, LINEMO — are the smart choice, and povo's pay-as-you-go "toppings" model is genuinely flexible if your usage is uneven.

One thing visitors must know: Japan tightly restricts who can buy a regular postpaid SIM, usually requiring residency and a Japanese bank account or credit card. Tourists generally can't sign up for a normal plan. The practical answer is a prepaid data SIM or a travel eSIM bought before or on arrival — that's almost always the right call for a short trip.

eSIM and connectivity

All four networks and the online sub-brands support eSIM on compatible phones, and eSIM is by far the easiest route for visitors since it skips the residency and paperwork hurdles of a physical contract SIM.
