Idea Cellular began in 1995 as Birla Communications. It was formed after winning GSM licences in Gujarat and Maharashtra, and was called Birla AT&T Communications from 1996 and Birla Tata AT&T from 2001. The Idea brand came in 2002. AT&T and the Tata Group left the venture in 2004 and 2006, and Idea became a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group.
Idea paid ₹57.68 billion for 3G spectrum in 11 circles in the 2010 auction, and gave its Delhi customers 4G from May 2018 over Vodafone's network. Its merger with Vodafone India was announced in March 2017 and completed on 31 August 2018, when Idea had about 220 million subscribers. The Idea brand carried on until 7 September 2020, when it and Vodafone became Vi.
