Background

More about eir

eir's mobile network began as Meteor, Ireland's third operator. eircom, the privatised Telecom Éireann, agreed to buy Meteor on 25 July 2005 for €420 million and kept it as a separate brand, with eMobile as a second brand sold alongside its landlines. eircom announced in September 2015 that it would become eir, and the Meteor name was later folded into it. The company itself dates from 1984, when Bord Telecom Éireann was set up.

The Meteor years still show in the settings. Many phones' built-in APN lists carry profiles called data.mymeteor.ie and wap.mymeteor.ie, and the MMS server is still mms.mymeteor.ie. For data, eir's own guides now give data.myeirmobile.ie.

eir switched on 5G in October 2019 in ten towns and cities, Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway among them, and said a year later that it reached more than 70% of the population. Its 4G Calling service is VoLTE. eir supports eSIM on iPhone. The head office is at Heuston South Quarter, Dublin 8.

GoMo, the online-only brand eir launched in October 2019, uses the same data APN. Lidl Connect Ireland and Lycamobile Ireland also run on eir's masts, each with its own settings.
