More about AT&T
AT&T's mobile network started as Cingular Wireless, a joint venture of SBC Communications and BellSouth founded on October 5, 2000. Cingular bought AT&T Wireless for $41 billion in a deal that closed on October 26, 2004, and took the AT&T name in January 2007. AT&T Mobility's head office is in Brookhaven, Georgia, next to Atlanta.
AT&T switched off its 3G network on February 22, 2022. Its 5G+ service on millimeter-wave spectrum went live in December 2018, and 5G+ on C-band spectrum on January 19, 2022. Its APN has changed with the network. AT&T now uses ENHANCEDPHONE for 5G phones, NRPHONE for phones on standalone 5G, NXTGENPHONE for LTE phones and Broadband for tablets. Some phones still carry phone, pta and wap.cingular from the GoPhone and Cingular years. AT&T had 110.2 million subscribers at the end of September 2026.
Cricket Wireless is AT&T's own prepaid brand. Boost Mobile has run on AT&T since EchoStar shut down Boost's own network on November 15, 2025. H2O Wireless, AirVoice Wireless, Consumer Cellular and Lycamobile also run on AT&T, and Straight Talk and Tracfone sell AT&T SIMs alongside other networks'. Each has its own APN, so set the one for the name on your SIM.
