More about TracFone
TracFone started in Miami in 1996 as Topp Telecom, founded by David Topp and F.J. Pollak. Telmex took a 55% stake in February 1999, and the company became TracFone Wireless in November 2000, when Telmex spun off its mobile arm as América Móvil. Verizon announced its purchase of TracFone on September 14, 2020, in a deal worth up to $6.9 billion, and closed it on November 23, 2021. TracFone's head office is in Miami.
TracFone also runs Straight Talk, launched with Walmart in 2009, and Simple Mobile, which América Móvil bought in 2012. TracFone phones have used several networks, and LTE reached them one network at a time: AT&T in September 2013, T-Mobile in March 2014 and Verizon in December 2014. That's why TracFone has no single APN and points customers to its lookup instead.
