More about Verizon
Verizon Wireless was founded on April 4, 2000, as a joint venture of Bell Atlantic and Vodafone AirTouch. Verizon bought out Vodafone's 45% stake in 2014, for $58.9 billion in cash plus stock and other payments. Its head office is at One Verizon Way in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
Verizon opened its LTE network in December 2010 in 39 markets, launched its sub-6 GHz Nationwide 5G in October 2020, and switched off its old CDMA network on December 31, 2022. Phones on Verizon now connect over LTE and 5G with the APN vzwinternet. Verizon requires it for general internet connections, beside vzwims, which text messaging needs. Verizon had 146.8 million subscribers on March 31, 2026.
Verizon has owned Tracfone Wireless since November 23, 2021, when it bought the company for about $6.25 billion. Tracfone and Straight Talk sell SIMs for Verizon as well as other networks, each with its own APN. Visible, launched in May 2018, is Verizon's own prepaid brand.
