Mobile Carriers in Mexico

Mexico's mobile market has one giant and two challengers. Telcel, part of Carlos Slim's América Móvil, dominates — it carries the majority of the country's subscribers and has by far the widest coverage, reaching small towns and highways the others don't. Movistar (Telefónica) and AT&T compete mainly in cities and along major corridors.

That lopsided structure is the single most useful thing to understand here. Telcel's network is so dominant that even Movistar leans on it — Movistar shut down much of its own radio network and now runs largely as a wholesale arrangement over rival infrastructure. AT&T built its own network after entering Mexico and offers a genuine alternative in urban areas, but Telcel still wins the moment you head into the countryside.

On top of these sit a growing layer of MVNOs. Bait, sold through Walmart stores, runs on Telcel's network and has exploded in popularity for being dirt cheap. Others like Virgin Mobile and various retail brands resell one of the three networks too. The pattern is familiar: same towers, lower price, lighter support.

Telcel unless you have a reason not to

My plain recommendation for Mexico is Telcel, or a Telcel-based MVNO like Bait if you want the coverage without the premium price. The reach is simply on another level outside the big cities, and for travellers driving between regions or visiting beach and colonial towns, that matters. AT&T is a reasonable city choice if its pricing suits you. Movistar I'd only pick for a specific deal, given it rides others' infrastructure anyway.

eSIM and getting a SIM

Telcel, AT&T, and Movistar support eSIM on compatible phones. Prepaid (de prepago) is the norm and easy to top up at corner shops, pharmacies, and supermarkets nationwide. Tourists can buy and activate a prepaid SIM with a passport; an Amigo Kit from Telcel is the classic traveller option, though a travel eSIM saves you the errand entirely.
