More about Movistar
Movistar México is Telefónica's Mexican operator, founded on 6 January 2000. That year Telefónica bought four operators in the north of the country, Cedetel, BajaCel, Norcel and Movitel, for about US$1,790 million, and in May 2002 it bought 92% of Pegaso PCS. Movistar launched 5G in three cities on 15 December 2022.
Movistar no longer runs its own radio network. It returned its spectrum to the government and carries its customers on AT&T's network, while still issuing its own SIMs, and it shut its GSM network in September 2020. Virgin Mobile, Weex and Flash Mobile run on Movistar.
On 8 April 2026 a group of investors led by OXIO and Newfoundland Capital Management announced that it had agreed to buy Movistar México from Telefónica. Movistar has more than 20 million mobile customers, and the buyers said it would keep the Movistar brand. The sale needs regulatory approval.
