Nearby countries

Brazil settled into three big networks after a major shake-up. Vivo (Telefónica), Claro (América Móvil), and TIM now run the country between them, having carved up the assets of the failed operator Oi a few years back. That deal expanded all three and ended Brazil's four-network era.

Vivo is generally the largest and has the broadest, most reliable coverage, particularly strong in the south and southeast. Claro is a close competitor with aggressive 5G expansion in the major cities. TIM has wide national reach too and has invested heavily in rural 4G. Across the big urban centres — São Paulo, Rio, Brasília — all three perform well, so coverage only really separates them once you head inland or north.

Below the big three sits a modest MVNO layer and a few regional operators serving specific states. These resell one of the main networks at lower prices, with the usual trade-off of lighter support and lower data priority when the network is busy. The reseller scene here is smaller than in Europe, so most Brazilians still buy directly from Vivo, Claro, or TIM.

Prepaid country

Brazil is overwhelmingly prepaid (pré-pago). Recharges are everywhere — pharmacies, newsstands, apps, even ATMs — and the plans bundle generous data plus social-app allowances that don't count against your cap, a quirk you'll notice the first time WhatsApp keeps working after your data "runs out."

Which to choose

For broad coverage and consistency, Vivo is the default I'd point most people to, especially outside the biggest cities. Claro is the pick if fast urban 5G is your priority and it covers your area. TIM competes hard on price and rural 4G, so it's worth a look if value matters and you're not chasing the absolute widest footprint.

eSIM and SIMs for visitors

Vivo, Claro, and TIM support eSIM on compatible phones. Buying a Brazilian SIM requires a CPF (the national taxpayer ID), which residents have and visitors generally don't — that single requirement is why most tourists skip the local-SIM hassle and use a travel eSIM instead.
