More about Telcel America
Telcel America was a prepaid brand that América Móvil, the owner of Mexico's largest mobile network, Telcel, ran in the US through its TracFone subsidiary. It launched in December 2012, with service in South Texas, Phoenix and Los Angeles, and San Diego next. It sold two plans: $45 a month for unlimited calls, texts and internet, and $60 a month adding unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles in Mexico.
The pitch rested on América Móvil owning both ends of the call. US carriers normally pay a Mexican carrier to complete a call there, and Telcel then held about 70% of Mexico's mobile market, so most of those calls stayed inside one company. Like TracFone's other brands, Telcel America had no network of its own and resold capacity from US networks.
In January 2021, Telcel America told its customers they would "soon be a part of the Simple Mobile family". Both brands ran on T-Mobile, and Simple Mobile already offered the same features, including roaming in Mexico. telcelamerica.com now redirects to simplemobile.com, and Verizon has owned TracFone, Simple Mobile included, since November 23, 2021.
