No Mobile Data After a SIM Swap: How to Fix It
Restore mobile data after swapping or replacing your SIM, with the most likely fixes first.
You popped in a new SIM, calls and texts work, but mobile data is dead. This is one of the most common connection problems there is, and the good news is it's almost always fixable in a few minutes. Work through these in order, starting with the quick stuff.
Start here: the 30-second checks
Before touching any settings, rule out the simple things:
Toggle airplane mode on, wait five seconds, off. This forces the phone to reconnect from scratch and fixes a surprising number of cases.
Restart the phone. Yes, really. The network stack re-reads everything on boot, and this alone resolves many post-swap data problems.
Check mobile data is actually on, and that the new SIM is selected as the data SIM if your phone has two.
If data's back, you're done. If not, the cause is almost certainly the APN.
The likely culprit: the APN
A new SIM doesn't always trigger your phone's automatic APN setup, particularly on unlocked or imported phones. When that happens, the phone can register for calls and texts but has no idea how to route data.
The fix is to enter the APN by hand. Find your carrier on the US carriers page, copy its exact values, and add them. Our guide on finding your APN settings shows where the menu is on iPhone and Android. After saving, select the new APN and restart.
On iPhone, try a network reset
If you're on an iPhone and can't even find an editable APN screen, that's normal, because many carriers lock it. Instead, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This re-pulls your carrier's profile and re-establishes data without manual entry. It clears saved Wi-Fi passwords, which is the only real downside.
Still nothing?
If you've reset the APN and restarted and data still won't come on, step back and check the things settings can't fix:
Is the new SIM fully activated on your account? A SIM that hasn't completed activation won't carry data no matter what.
Is the phone unlocked and compatible with this carrier's network?
Is there a billing hold or a data-less plan on the line?
Any one of those will block data while looking exactly like a settings problem. If none apply and you're still dark, contact your carrier, since the issue may be on their end with how the SIM was provisioned.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does data break after a SIM swap specifically?
- A new SIM doesn't always trigger the phone's automatic APN setup, especially in unlocked or imported phones. Calls and texts can work while data stays dark, because data is the part that needs the APN configured correctly.
- Do I need a new APN every time I swap SIMs?
- Only if the new SIM is from a different carrier, or the phone didn't auto-configure. A SIM from the same carrier usually carries the same settings. When in doubt, check the APN against your carrier's values.
