How to enter APN settings

Open Access Point Names
Go to
Settings → Network & Internet → Mobile network → Access Point Names. On some phones it's under Settings → Connections → Mobile networks.2
Add a new APN
Tap + (or the menu → New APN) and set APN to
rakuten.jp. Fill any other non-blank values from the table above and leave the rest as default.3
Save and select it
Save from the menu, then select the new Rakuten Mobile APN and toggle Airplane Mode on for ten seconds so the change takes effect.
Tip
After saving, toggle Airplane Mode on and off for 10 seconds. This forces the phone to re-register with the network and pick up the new APN.
Troubleshooting
Common issues
No data on an unlocked or imported phone. Enter the APN by hand and restart. Set the APN to rakuten.jp with no username or password. Also confirm the phone actually supports Rakuten's bands — an unsupported handset can show signal but never pass data reliably.
Calls and messages don't work but data does. Rakuten routes calls and messaging through its Rakuten Link app, not the native dialer. Install and sign in to Rakuten Link to get the included calling.
Settings reset after an update. A software update occasionally clears the APN. Re-enter rakuten.jp.
