Nearby countries

Spain has four network operators and an unusually crowded shelf of cheap brands sitting on top of them. The operators are Movistar (Telefónica), Vodafone, Orange, and the MásMóvil group, whose flagship is Yoigo. Orange and MásMóvil recently merged into a single large player, reshaping what used to be a clear four-way split.

Movistar has the deepest network, a legacy of being the former state operator, and it shows in rural and coastal coverage. Vodafone and Orange are strong in cities and tourist areas. Yoigo built later and leans on partner roaming in thinner regions, so its standalone footprint is smaller.

Where Spain gets fun is the value brands. Simyo runs on Orange. Lowi is Vodafone's discount line. Pepephone sits within the MásMóvil group. These are proper MVNOs and near-MVNOs: identical network, far lower price, with the usual trade-off of online-only support and lower data priority when a cell is congested.

The cheap-brand advantage

Spain is one of the best countries in Europe for low-cost mobile, and the reason is this dense layer of resellers fighting over the same towers. If you don't need a physical store or a bundled phone, a brand like Simyo or Lowi gives you a top-three network for a fraction of the flagship price. I'd reach for one of those before ever signing a Movistar or Vodafone contract directly.

Coverage where it counts

Movistar is the pick for rural Spain, the islands, and anyone driving long distances. In Madrid, Barcelona, or a coastal resort, all four networks perform well, so let price decide. Tourists on the Costa del Sol or in the Balearics rarely have a coverage problem on any operator.

eSIM and switching

All four networks support eSIM on recent phones, and the larger value brands increasingly do too. Porting your number is free and quick; you give the new provider your current number and ID, and the switch completes within a working day. As an EU country, a Spanish SIM roams across the bloc at home rates.
